
Centre for Democracy and Economic Initiatives (CDEDI) has called on the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Malawi to probe the procurement process carried out by the Southern Region Water Board (SRWB). CDEDI made the call after SRWB awarded a contract to Jiangsu Suzhong Construction Group Company Limited that is K1.6 billion higher than the amount the lowest bidder demanded. Development Diaries learnt that SRWB awarded the construction of extension of Mangochi Potable Water Supply Project contract to Jiangsu Suzhong at $16.3 million. funded by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development Alghanim Plem quoted $14.4 million, Sawa Group/Metito joint ventured demanded $21.7 million, while Kuwait Dynamic Limited/Fisd partnership quoted $12.3 million. Executive Director of CDEDI, Sylvester Namiwa, said the bidding process should be thoroughly investigated. He noted that the contract was awarded at a time Malawi government was struggling to provide essential services to its citizens. Namiwas said, It is a well-known fact that the loan for the project from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development will be paid using taxpayers’ money’.
