Update: CDEDI to Meet Police IG Over Recent Acts of Excessive Force

Thursday, 30th September, 2021

Following the increase in reported cases of excessive use of force by  the Malawi Police Service (MPS), on unarmed citizens, especially women, children, and the elderly, the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI), and other Civil Rights Organizations, have time without number, voiced out such incidences but yielded no results.

It is against this background that the CDEDI decided to book an appointment with the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Kainja, in order to seek answers on the questions Malawians having been asking, bordering on police brutality. The attached letter has outlined the agenda items that the CDEDI is bringing to the attention of the IG.

We are, therefore, pleased to inform all Malawians of goodwill, that the IG has granted us an audience, which is scheduled to take place tomorrow, Friday, 1st October 2021, at the Police Headquarters at Area 30 in Lilongwe,  at 10:00hrs.

We will keep all Malawians well updated, as regards the outcome of this meeting.
